Salla sets the stage for FIS speed skiing events
Salla is without a doubt the number one training and competition location for speed skiing. This fact was understood a long time ago by Kalevi “Häkä” Häkkinen, who introduced speed skiing to Finland and Salla. Salla’s EP competition slope has since been the location for several (1995-2019) speed skiing world cup events. The tradition continues in 2020.
The competition gets underway already on Tuesday evening.
The fastest men and women compete in two speed skiing world cup events in Salla during the second week of February (Thu-Fri, 13.-14.2.2020). The competition starts already on Tuesday evening 12 February, when the FIS speed competition kicks off at night. Northern lights and a bright starry sky have been booked for the event, so the right atmosphere is guaranteed.
Will records be broken once more?
During the world cup event held in Salla the previous year, surprise names topped the podium in both men and women. In men, both events were won by the Austrian Manuel Kramer, who broke Salla’s slope record with a speed of 170.212 km/h. The women’s series was dominated on both days by Britta Backlund, who clocked in a top speed of 164.910 km/h.
Come witness the Italian brothers Simone and Ivan Origone challenge Manuel’s slope record. Ivan is the current world record holder with a speed of 254.958 km/h (Vars, France) and Simone holds the previous Salla record of 169.57 km/h. Lead by Jukka Viitasaari, the Finns will do their best to challenge the top of the rankings.
In women, Valentina Greggio is seeking revenge over Britta Backlund for last season’s race. As the current women’s world record holder with a speed of 247.038 km/h (Vars, France), Valentina is well-positioned to challenge.
